Slept in this morning. After a coffee and a pastry we get ready to explore Rothenburg with Dawn’s grandfather. It’s a walled city about an hour from their house. We take the autobahn and Dawn get’s into the groove of no speed limits and aggressive passing.
The town is well preserved and adorable. While I quite like the town I think I might be suffering from the fact that I've seen a number of well preserved medieval towns in the last 13 days... one after another, so this is “just another medieval village”. I’m positive if I had started here I would be gushing about how adorable it is.
After a bit of wandering around town Leo (Dawn’s grandfather) and I decide to sit down for a snack while Dawn pillages the Christmas shops (of which this town has many). Bratwurst and sauerkraut with dark beer, yes please. Additionally this restaurant is offering spargelsuppe as a special. We've hit the culinary jackpot by visiting Germany during their white asparagus (spargel) harvest. I've seen a number of restaurants advertising fresh spargel. A white asparagus soup is a traditional dish to make from spargel and I'm excited to give it a try. It's very tasty.
Dawn eventually joins us and we have a nice slow lunch. We take a museum tour right off the town square which has an interesting collection of artifacts from the towns many centuries. There are especially a lot of artifacts from the town’s participating in the 30’s year war.
We walk the town walls for a bit then decide it’s coffee and dessert time followed by some light souvenir shopping.
After our historical cute town visit we head back to the house and then head out for dinner. They take us to another small restaurant in the adjacent village. The food is amazing. They also have spargelsuppe and this place's version is even better than the one I had for lunch. I also have a fantastic schnitzel covered with ham and cheese. The local specialty is a potato croquette, think super tatertot. I've really been enjoying the German beer, but since I’m in the middle of wine country I feel compelled to start trying the local wine. I have a nice glass of red wine with dinner. After the first glass I order a second glass by pointing to a small placard on that table that I can’t read except to determine it’s for wine from 2010. I have no idea if it’s red or white or whatever. It turns out it’s for kickass red wine. Unfortunately I get the very last glass they have and no one else (Dawn) can order it. Soooo good. I’m sad that I can’t order another glass of this fantastic wine, but leave very satisfied.
Unfortunately it was hard to talk during dinner because there was a table of gentlemen behind us that have never been introduced to the concept of “indoor voice”. Four Germans yelling and laughing can drown out any attempt at vocal communication.
